This is the first in a series of posts that shall be known as:
The Barca Blaugranes Awards!
The season is over, and the Barca players are either on their holidays or preparing to compete at various international tournaments. However, this means that we can start handing out awards!
The first in this series is for the Best Player, and this is how it works:
The Barca Blaugranes writers voted for their choice for each award, and the one with the most votes is put in the post.
However, should you disagree, we will have a poll with a variety of choices, and at the end of the series, we will post the results of the reader's vote.
Now, let's find out who the best player is...
There could only be one man worthy of this award:
This is the man who finished the season with 53 goals, and 24 assists. All in the space of 55 matches.
He defies description and on more than occasion, was the reason for Barcelona winning a match, instead of a draw. Coming into 2010/11 off the back of a record-eqaulling 47-goal haul, everyone said that the sky was the limit for the diminutive Argentine.
Turns out, they were right, but Messi didn't just stop at the sky, he soared into the stratosphere, and past that into a realm of intergalactic uber-stardom. When La Pulga gets the ball, the crowd stands up, there is a noise of expectation, and more often than not, he delivers.
Take for instance, the game versus Arsenal. Messi's goal, where he delicately played the ball over Manuel Almunia's head, only to volley it in after was breath-taking. Against Madrid, he was spectacular, and it is possible that this could be the summer that he silences the critics, who say that he is poor for Argentina.
Even if he doesn't, few will dispute that he is the best in the world. The current hot topic is whether he is the Best Ever.
I don't know, but ask yourself this: Would you swap Messi for Pele, Maradona or Di Stefano?
Just to sign off, a video of what I choose the be the best Messi-moment of the season.
