FC Barcelona News: 13 January 2012; Barça Set Up Quarter-Final El Clasico, Fontas Tears ACL, Pedro Also Injured
'In my entire life I have never seen a player of such quality' - how Lionel Messi's path to greatness began against Fabio Capello's Juventus - Goal.com
The previous season he had made his debut, finishing with nine appearances, and he had become Barca’s youngest scorer (since superseded by Bojan), a World Cup winner at youth level and now he was in the sights of Moratti and Inter; Messi was, without question, the hot player when Juventus came to town. It was the first time I experienced full-blown Messi-mania.
Barca to face Real in Copa quarters - Yahoo! Eurosport
Hosts Osasuna dominated the first half and should have had more to show it than Dejan Lekic’s 40th-minute strike: they were made to pay early in the second when Alexis Sanchez tapped in a fine Adriano cross. Following the introduction of the world’s best player Lionel Messi, Barca were in control and added a second when youngster Sergi Roberto cracked in a fine finish, assisted in style by the Argentine.
Barcelona's Pedro doubtful for Real Madrid Copa del Rey clash - Goal.com
It's not yet known exactly how long the Spain international will be sidelined for following the thigh problem, but it seems unlikely that Pedro will be match fit for the upcoming league match against Real Betis this Sunday, while he's also doubtful for next week's Copa del Rey quarter-final against Real Madrid.
Andreu Fontàs, injured, the bitter side of the game | FC Barcelona
After 11 minutes, Andreu Fontàs couldn’t pick himself off the Reyno de Navarra pitch. The look of pain on his face sounded the warning alarms on the Barça bench. The first medical exam was administered after the medical staff carried the defender off the field. It pointed to an injury of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the right knee.
PSG edges Barça's U17 B side out of the Al Kass International Cup | FC Barcelona
García Pimienta’s men perfectly controlled the first half with 55% of the possession. But Dembele Mousa’s second half goal gave PSG passage to the next round thanks to goal differential. In the first game, Barça beat Al-Ahly 3-0 while PSG put 9 past the Egyptians. The three teams were all in Group B, and PSG will go through to the next round.
Ask Guillem: Martinez to Manchester? Struggling strikers at Barcelona? | Guillem Balague Football Website
Messi has won titles for Barcelona and it is automatic that he will play as either the false striker, wide or as a midfielder and that everybody else has to work around him. When Villa arrived, he was told: `Don`t expect to be the top goalscorer. Your job is to help Messi become even better`. He accepted this at first but now it is harder to accept because he has always been a goalscorer.
Barcelona's Jonathan Soriano: I confirm there are advanced talks with Benfica - Goal.com
Benfica have long been credited with an interest in Soriano, but the 26-year-old's knee injury prevented the Portuguese club from signing him last summer. The Spanish frontman has revealed that he is in negotiations with Benfica and conceded that he is looking forward to reuniting with Nolito, who signed for the Portuguese giants at the end of the last season after finding playing opportunities very hard to come by at Camp Nou.
Ronaldo in spotlight after fan spat - Yahoo! Eurosport
Even more attention than usual will be focused on Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo when the Liga leaders play at Real Mallorca on Saturday after his petulant reaction to whistling from disgruntled fans last weekend. There appears to be a perception among some of the Real faithful that the world's most expensive player can be too selfish and that he is more concerned with personal success than collective triumph.
Weiss to consider future | Sky Sports
Weiss has had limited opportunities to impress at the Etihad Stadium since breaking into the first-team squad as a teenager in 2009, and he has had to settle for loan spells elsewhere to get regular football. The Slovakia international, now 22, is currently midway through a season-long deal with Espanyol and he is enjoying life in Spain, perhaps even more so than when he was in the Premier League.

flip!!!!!!!
I go with the experimental forward line of Messi, Alexis and Cesc. I think Cuenca might be a little inexperienced against our evil opponents, he can feature as a substitute. Give Cesc a real role, not a dynamic/roaming role. I know he drags his markers out of position when roaming, but he sometimes looks confused and often isolated.
I honestly want us to demolish them on both legs, it might ruin their confidence in league games and before they know it… Bang!!! We are ahead

What the hell is up with all these injuries...since the season started...
If mourinho goes for a 3-4-3…then will barca revert to a 4-3-3 or go with more daring/risky 3-5-2?

Come on Inder, you are better than that :)
Mourinho can rather have a makeshift defence and field a 6-4-1 than play a 3-man back-line against us. In fact if we reverse things and further humiliate them by winning everything this season by beating them left, right and centre this season, I don’t see a Mourinho-coached Madrid for 2012.

Mourinho with a 3-4-3?
I’m pretty sure that won’t happen, I just don’t see him experimenting against us. I think he will play 4-3-3 at least in the first Clasico, because his usual 4-2-3-1 has worked only once (CdR final). I think the fans will force him to actually attack this time, and not wait for counters, because they are slowly get tired of loosing to us.

Pretty sure he played a 4-3-3 in that CDR final.

I think it started as a 4-2-3-1
but transitioned into a 4-3-3 after Khedira took on a more defensive role. At least that’s how I remember it; mind you, it was a long time ago and it’s not a game I like to think about :)

sort of!
But it was both Pepe and Khedhira who were high up breaking up play and Alonso sitting deep and spraying passes. Watched it again recently!

If we continue having wingers injured,
I’m guessing he might be tempted to put Cristian Tello in the squad for lesser opponents?
I would say so
Tello is probably next in line after Cuenca. Deulofeu also would be an option, but he is very inexperienced, while Kiko, who could also be an option, just hasn’t proved himself this season.

Hmmmmmmm
It’s tough to really gauge how important this clash is. Obviously, it’s very important for the players, who were noticeably distraught after last year’s defeat, but Guardiola has to be careful with his starters. His squad is picking up injuries, many of them recurring, (Fontas, Villa, Pedro, Sanchez, Iniesta…) and the next few months are going to be full of critical games that will decide titles — La Liga, Champions League — that are infinitely more meaningful than this one. He should tread carefully.
With all that said, it is the one trophy that Barcelona do not currently hold in their possession and that’s not a small thing. Not at all. This series will, therefore, be a multidimensional chess match, not only between tactics and squads but also between competing priorities and expectations. Will Mourinho show his hand for the April Classico, or will he continue to try to get that one elusive victory in Madrid’s favored formation to convince his players (and the club supporters) that they can play Barcelona “the beautiful way?” Should be interesting.
I’d like to see this line-up:
Sanchez Messi Alves
Xavi Iniesta
Busquets
Abidal – Pique – Mascherano – Puyol

I think mourinho has a problem that he will have to face...
On the one hand…mourinho is the kind of coach who has a minimum of 2 formations he can use and the team is used to…but this is very different from guardiola and barca…
Barca is fluid(duh) in that they can change formation anytime and be just as effective..something im not sure Madrid are capable of…their core principles are stoic…positions of a player and such…
And mou will be inclined to do the practical thing..which he is popular for and play the defensive minded, kick messi and iniesta approach and go with the 4-3-3…but im not sure their fans will accept that especially in the bernabeu…although in the end they just want to win…im sure they wouldn’t mind shooting messi if that’s what it takes:p

Interesting fact:
If none of Leo’s 17 league goals he’s scored so far this season counted, Barca would have one point less than they do now. If none of Fabregas’s goals counted, Barca would be 11 points behind their current total.

Sorry typo
Barca would be four points behind their current total. (for Fab’s goals)
