Jose Mourinho is in the news again, this time around for the wrong reason! Why? Mistaken the FIFA Ballon d’Or for a team-effort award rather than the individualistic perspective of the award – I thought he ought to have known this!
When Messi won the award in a World Cup year (2010), many people cried foul, but I was quick to challenge as many I could reach to please mention one player (in the season) that was as outstanding as Lionel Messi, all I got were flimsy excuses. There and then I knew the FIFA Ballon d’Or had taken a new dimension – most outstanding player (note the individualistic perspective)! In that year (2010), Eto’o Schneider, Milito all from a Mourinho-led Inter Milan squad won the prestigious Intercontinental Treble (UEFA Champions League, Serie A and the Coppa Italia) and not only that, they were all outstanding in their own rights, yet, a Messi stole the show. The current brouhaha being fanned by the self-styled ‘special one and now only one’ where he declared that, ‘it will be a sin if the Ballon d’ Or is not awarded to Cristiano Ronaldo’ is to say the least selfish. Why? If a Mourinho is claiming a Ronaldo deserves the FIFA Ballon d’Or because he won a better title than Messi then what happens to a Drogba who singlehandedly gave Chelsea their first ever UEFA Champions League title and was instrumental to their FA Cup title last season (2011/12), hence, giving them the doubles, or what of an Aguero who was instrumental to the first Premiership title of Manchester City in 38 years, are we going to sweep those ones under the carpet and just place the crown on C. Ronaldo’s head because a Mourinho says he (Ronaldo) deserves it? Perhaps a Mourinho will try to explain again why an Iniesta who won the ‘Player of the Tournament’ in a competition (2012 European Championship) his boy, C. Roanldo, featured in should not be given the Ballon d’Or. I think by now, the footballing world should be familiar with Mourinho’s antics – indeed he is a psychopath!
Messi is still by far the favourite to win the award for a record 4th consecutive time. Why? He did the impossible in a season while the rest of the team were fatigued, scoring an unprecedented 50 league goals, a record in La Liga and capping it up with an unmatched 73 official goals and 29 assists in all competitions (including the 14 goals in UEFA Champions League). If you ask me 1,000 times who deserves to be in the first 3 for the Ballon d’Or, I will tell you a C. Ronaldo is not supposed to be on that list. Mourinho is not really helping the case of C. Ronaldo, his continuous ranting about the award is quite laughable. A FIFA Ballon d’Or is an individual award for an outstanding player at least with an award to show and Messi has an award (Copa del Rey) to show for his showmanship compared to C. Ronaldo’s 1 (LaLiga). My point!
