Some reports now saying we'll play a 3-4-3

With Mascherano as DM and Cesc as the CAM. We’ll have to wait and see how the boys line up.

Surely not

I think it has to do with today’s tactics. Dani was beat badly by Alba/Mathieu in the La Liga game against Valencia, that’s why we have Puyol (again) on the right, may it be a 3 or 4 man backline. And as we know Dani on the wing doesn’t really work so the only place left for him is on the bench.

by Bostjan Cernensek on Feb 8, 2012 8:23 PM CET up reply actions

I disagree

Dani Alves played as a forward with Puyol as a centerback. That’s how Valencia scored those 2 goals in the league… with Mascherano at right center back. All we’ve done is put Cuenca instead of Alves and (possibly) had Puyol and Mascherano switch spots. Does Cuenca give us a better defense than Dani Alves?

The second half, in which we scored the goal to force the draw and almost won and played better on the whole, it was Puyol (!) who was subbed off with Dani Alves as a right defender and Adriano as a right winger.

The last game, we went without Alves, and conceded on that same side again. We didn’t start looking better and less vunerable until Alves was introduced as a right winger.

by Luis Mazariegos on Feb 8, 2012 8:32 PM CET up reply actions

When Dani plays as winger he's not any better than Cuenca defensively

OK, Dani does work harder to get back than Isaac, but guys like Alexis or Pedro, make more back-pressure tackles than Dani.
Dani is a good defender when he actually plays in defense (best example is when he stopped Ronaldo cold), but if you limit him to just that you might as well just play Puyol at RB. If this lineup eventually ends up being a 3-4-3 then I definitely prefer to see Puyol, Pique and Abi in the backline and not Dani with any of the other two.
And if I’m not mistaken Alves replaced Alexis in the Valencia game and not Puyol.

I tend lean towards Bostjan's perspective

When Alves plays in defense, he is more valuable vs him playing as a winger, when he plays a winger he is not as effective in scoring positions as Cuenca and becomes defensive liability

by hobo_barca on Feb 8, 2012 8:54 PM CET up reply actions

You're not understanding what I'm saying

1) I’m not advocating Dani INSTEAD of Puyol, I’m advocating Dani AND Puyol. One as a right-back and the other as a right defender.

2) I’m not advocating Dani as an attacker, though I’d prefer him over Cuenca defensively. Again, 4 man line. Dani and Puyol both as defenders ont he right side.

Now on to what you’re saying: a 3 man line of Pique, Puyol and Abidal… We had a defense of Puyol, Mascherano and Abidal and THAT line got the 2 goals scored on them. The only changes is Cuenca instead of Alves, which like I said doesn’t help our defense. Puyol on the right instead of in the center, an improvement maybe. Pique instead of Mascherano. Doesn’t strike me as a great improvement.

IF we’re going with a three-man line (which I don’t recommend), why not go with the one closer to the one that got us the draw in the league (that would be Alves, Mascherano and Abidal) instead of going with the one that went 2-1 down? . Only Puyol instead of Mascherano, so that he can play in the holding role?

by Luis Mazariegos on Feb 8, 2012 9:01 PM CET up reply actions

I'm always for a 4-man backline

I think everybody knows by now that I hate the 3-4-3 (even when it works). My ideal backline would be Dani-Puyol-Pique-Abi, but it this case, against Valencia’s very skilled forwards/midfielders, I prefer Puyol stopping Alba/Mathieu.

I have to admit I’m surprised. If you ask me he should’ve been fired after the 2010 World Cup, but if you stick with him after that, then Capello should’ve stayed until after the EURO Cup is over.

He was right

He merely said that the FA shouldn’t have made a judgement on Terry’s captaincy, that it was his decision and they should wait until after his trial, and they got the hump. I feel sorry for him, doomed from the start. Unbelievably, Jose is shorter odds than Stuart Pearce…

i think the FA should have taken care of the terry situation long ago.

it’s ridiculous that the courts are taking so long to resolve it as well. i think terry should have been excluded entirely until the case gets heard.

the manager should most certainly be the one to name the captain.

the FA has really messed this up. if terry isn’t allowed (by them) to be captain how can they allow him on the team at all?

Valencia don't even seem to be trying anymore

A tough task to score twice with only 10 against Barca, but still..

And we have a repeat of the 2008/09 Copa del Rey Final

The venue is still unknown, but Athletic is open to a Camp Nou Final (even against Barcelona)

Yep...

…that’s two games in a row, he’s come close. the people who criticize him are going to have another field day with the chances he missed, but i have to side with Messi. He’s already scrutinized heavily as it is. Maybe all that talk about him is wearing on him a bit…I don’t know?
