After the matches yesterday there is just one group with games left to play – Group D and there is everything to play for. While Sweden are out after two defeats from two games, France, England and Ukraine can all secure a place in the quarter-finals with a favourable result. Whoever ends up topping the group will be facing Italy who sealed their place in the final eight with a 2-0 win over 10-man Republic of Ireland, whilst the runners-up will find themselves up against reigning champions Spain who won Group C yesterday with a late goal from Jesus Navas. In truth Spain looked far from their World Cup winning best which has prompted many to suggest that Spain are in fact "beatable". On the other hand, Spain are actually unbeaten in the tournament despite not playing their best football – which could equally be viewed as a strength.
Tonight’s games are sure to be hotly contested, and if previous games are anything to go by, the England – Ukraine match appears to be the pick of the bunch. With Wayne Rooney returning for the English, expectations are unnaturally high, but with home support on their side, Ukraine are not to be under-estimated. France’s match with Sweden isn’t a foregone conclusion, but one has to assume that the group leaders will emerge victorious against the winless Swedes.
