Barcelona's Defensive Woes

If it wasn't already a blow that Thiago Silva has insisted he is staying with PSG, the aspiring star center back Marquinhos has also signed with the French money bags PSG. After showing a very promising season at Roma, the French side snagged the young talent on a 5-year deal and for about 30 million euros. The current question for the Barcelona board is, now what? Thiago Silva and Marquinhos are now both out of the picture which means Barcelona are going to have to go back to the drawing board and choose who they will want to accompany Gerard Pique in the back.

There have been rumors that Chelsea's David Luiz has been linked with the Catalan club, but the London side insist that he is not for sale. Other center backs that Barcelona has been linked with are Daniel Agger of Liverpool and Adil Rami, the current center back for Spanish side Valencia. There is also the consideration whether the young Marc Bartra could be paired along side Pique. There is speculation of whether or not he will go on loan, but why won't the management give him a whirl? We all saw what happened with Varane at Real Mardid.

If it wasn't obvious enough, Barcelona's defense is the weakest part of the whole system. With Puyol past his prime and make-shift center backs such as Mascherano and Alex Song filling in the void, Barcelona has been conceding more goals then they should. Who remembers the 7-0 (aggregate) whopping from Bayern Munich? Not only is finding the right center back to anchor the Blaugrana back four a priority, the outside fullbacks need a bit of reconstruction. No, I'm not saying they need to buy another fullback, what I'm saying is they need to re-think their tactics. Both Dani Alves and Jordi Alba love to sprint up the sidelines and help offensively, but that leaves the back very vulnerable. With Abidal gone, who is a full-back that stayed back more often, the other option is to use Martin Montoya. He may be young, but he has shown promise he can become a world class. The more experience he gains, the better he becomes.

In the end, Barcelona need to make a center back purchase and fast. All the potentials have rejected any consideration of going to the Catalan club so far or they've already moved onto another club. Who do you think Barcelona should buy now and what do you think Barcelona should do with their current defensive resources?
