When Thiago Alcantara's transfer to Bayern Munich was announced, many fans were sad, confused, but also understood why he left. Thiago wanted the playing time and Barcelona couldn't promise him that. Will the Barcelona Board regret this decision? Here are my reasons of why I think they will.
- The youth and the energy he provides: At the blossoming age of 22, Thiago Alcantara definitely has the capabilities to put in more games then other aging Barca players. With Xavi at the age of 33, his body is beginning to decline and the number of games he can put in can only decrease as he gets older. Many can argue that Barcelona still have Iniesta, Cesc Fabregas, and the newly promoted Sergi Roberto to handle the midfield. Let's be honest though, even though Iniesta will be honing the midfield for a few more years, we don't know how long Fabregas will be staying and whether or not Sergi Roberto can show that he can really break into the first team.
- Barcelona DNA (adapting to the system): One day Barcelona will need to buy a new midfielder who will need to adapt to the Barcelona playing style and quickly. Even though Fabregas has shown glimpses of his former self, he has shown that adapting to the system is not always easy and it makes it tough to secure a spot for the starting line-up. We don't know if will also happen to other midfielders that Barcelona may consider in the future, but the same case could happen. If Thiago were to stay, there would be no worry about whether or not he needs to adapt to the system. He's a La Masia graduate that played for Barcelona B during his most crucial developmental years. Yes, Fabregas is also a La Masia graduate, but during his developmental years, he went to Arsenal, where he crafted his skill to fit the English style of play.
- Stacks of Potential: Thiago Alcantara may have not played in the big games for Barcelona, but when he played he showed he has true potential. He may have not shined in some games he played, but others he has. I believe it's due to the lack of playing time in big games and just games in general, is the reason why he hasn't been able to develop his higher level of play. So far during the pre-season for Bayern Munich, he has shown he is a good signing, even scoring his first goal for the club off his chest!
- Future Price: If Thiago ever makes Fabregas-esq return and he proves to all the critics that he is all that, Thiago's transfer price won't be 25 million euros anymore. If anything it would be 30-40 million, maybe even 50 million (I know that's pushing it). I'm just saying that they wouldn't have had to worry about his asking price if they did all they could to keep him at Camp Nou.
