FC Barcelona: Is David Villa the Thierry Henry of 2011/12?

Henry was brilliant in the 2008/09 season, will Villa play a similar role next season?

Yesterday I mentioned that next season could be a "break-through" season for David Villa, and when you start to think about it, El Guaje is quite similar to a former Barca front man.

First off, there were years of rumours before he finally joined, and when he joined, he was around 30 years of age, just like someone else. His first season disappointed a fair few people, but it’s worth mentioning that he changed position, and was no longer the "go-to-guy" as he was with his previous club, exactly the same as man I am comparing him to.

That player?

Thierry Henry.

Did you guess it? Well, the title is a bit of a give-away, but it frightens me just how identical these two are. All of the above is correct, but the figures they posted in their first season are fairly similar too. Henry contributed a total of 30 scorer points (goals and assists) in his first season, while Villa managed 32, in three more games.

David Villa and Thierry Henry play very much alike, with both adjusting to a left-wing position, where their pace, and ability to cut inside a marking defender are paramount to success. While Henry is superior with the ball at this feet, Villa can boast better passing ability, but other than that, the pair are like two peas from a pod.

For example, both contributed to a huge victory over Real Madrid, as Villa scored twice in the famous Manita triumph at the Camp Nou:

While Henry also scored twice in the 6-2 drubbing at the Bernabeu:

The good news is that Henry was considered a failure from his first season, but played an integral part in the sextuple-winning side of 2008/09, so could one can assume that Villa will follow the pattern and play a vital part in another all-conquering side?

This Culé sure hopes so.
