The Gunners remained steadfast in their demands over a £40 million fee for the club captain but with the European champions unwilling to improve significantly on their initial £27m offer, and Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admitting the player was unsettled, it now appears as if the club will have to broker a cut-price deal to move on.

Pique picked up a knock in the dying minutes of the first-half and was forced to leave the pitch due to the knock. Busquets, who replaced Pique, managed to stay on the pitch until the final whistle, but complained about a knee problem after the game. However, Spain's physio, Juan Cota, said to Sport that both players could feature if their injuries suffer no further ill-effects.

With Xavi beginning to feel the affects of a long and gruelling career, Spain need someone to step in right now. And so do Barcelona. That explains Guardiola's tireless pursuit of Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas, which looks as if it may finally be bearing fruit. So should Cesc arrive after all at Camp Nou, Barca won't be the only beneficiary; Del Bosque will be rather pleased as well.
