FC Barcelona: Bolton Wanderer's Gary Cahill an option for January.

Barca's next defender?
Barca's next defender?

Well it seems last weeks draws finally started to produce the rumors every Barcelona fan wanted to hear, those on defensive reinforcements. Gary Cahill, of Bolton Wanderers, is now the talk of the week and is the first defender to be linked with Barcelona since the summer. Cahill, a target of ArsenalLiverpool, Tottenham, among other clubs, is rumored to be the desired defensive choice for the Blaugrana and Barcelona is looking at making a swoop for the English International come January.

If rumors turn out to be true then Pep Guardiola has finally realized the inadequacy in depth that his back line faces and how injuries can have a dramatic effect on the teams season. It is wise therefore that Barcelona do pursue a good solid defender to reinforce themselves for what will surely be another long campaign. Cahill 25, stands 1.91 meters and is a center back, precisely where Barcelona lacks defensive cover. If Cahill does arrive in January then this will surely be the end of Javier Mascherano's tenure at makeshift center back and ensure that Busquets is pushes back into his holding role permanently. Cahill possess the height and the power to end Barcelona's susceptibility to goals from corners and set pieces which seem to be this teams Achilles heel.

Cahill's arrival would also put in doubt the future of Andreu Fontas on the team since he would have to face the stern competition of battle tested defenders in Puyol,Pique,Cahill,Mascherano, all vying for a starting berth on the team. Cahill would improve Barcelona's ability to compete for Silverware on all fronts if he could adapt quickly to the technical nature of La Liga. Adapting to new surroundings would definitely be an issue that Cahill would need to overcome but he seems to posses the technical attributes that would make him a good signing. Barcelona are rumored to be mounting a £5 million offer for the defender but, Bolton would not sell him for anything less that £ 13 million. Cahill would also be eligible to play in the UEFA Champions League since he is not cup tied.
