Yesterday I posted the full La Liga schedule for Barcelona, and alone, it doesn’t mean an awful lot. We could speculate about which games would be most important and which sections of the league campaign looked most difficult, but as Al commented, it needs a bit more context. So, with a bit of tweaking I added in provisional dates for the league fixtures, before finding out exactly when Barcelona could feature in the UEFA Champions League, and then I did the same with the Copa del Rey. I also added in the pre-season fixtures and the Supercopa clashes with Real Madrid – which are the only matches thus far with a confirmed date.
Looking at the calendar now, it’s much easier to see which portions of the season are going to be toughest, and there are no surprises as the January schedule appears the most gruelling at the moment – assuming Barcelona reach the latter stages of the Copa del Rey. Also noticeable is that the start to the season just got a whole lot more difficult, thanks in part to the slightly bizarre timing of the Joan Gamper Trophy (which hopefully is subject to change). At present, the Blaugrana could play in six matches over the course of 15 days, starting with the opening match against Real Sociedad and ending with a home match against Valencia. On the other hand, the league matches that surround the knockout stages of the UCL appear much easier than previous years, even a trip to San Mames would be preferable between each leg of a Champions League semi-final compared to a Clasico.
All (provisional) dates for La Liga matches are on a Sunday, while all Champions League matches are assumed to be on a Tuesday at this stage – the Final aside. Depending on the draw (and ultimately progression) there are two different weeks in which each UCL Round of 16 match could be played, and all Copa del Rey fixtures will take place in a three day window which begins on the date specified below.
