FC Barcelona News: 15 July 2012: Mascherano Set To Sign Contract Extension, Villa Excited About Return

It's been too long...
It's been too long...

The big news coming out of Barcelona today centres around Javier Mascherano, who is set to sign a new contract after establishing himself as an important member of the first team over the past season. Mascherano is also in the news for his quotes on Argentina trying to replicate Barcelona, and for also stating that he wishes to continue at centre-back for the Blaugrana in the same interview. However, the biggest news of the past 24 hours (and perhaps of the summer) is that PSG have completed the signing of Thiago Silva from AC Milan. Suddenly, I'm not looking forward to that particular friendly any more...

The 28-year-old's agent, Walter Tamer, reportedly received positive signs from sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta during a first meeting in May, and was told that everything would be sorted out before the start of the new campaign. According to the publication, Mascherano will add two years onto his contract with the Blaugrana, which presently expires in 2014.

He told Mundo Deportivo: "This is the summer I have most desire for the holidays to end and to be able to go to work already. It is also the summer I have enjoyed least. I have passed a check-up with the Barcelona doctors and I am desperate to return to normal training with my teammates, not training separately."

Cuenca: "Tito Vilanova is counting on me" | FC Barcelona

On crutches, the player has said he’s looking forward to the new campaign. "The most important thing is for my knee to get better. I hope to be fit as soon as possible and be able to help the team play some good games", he said. Cuenca is one of the fourteen first team members due back at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper on Monday July 16.

"Today in Barcelona I want to continue playing as a central defender, it is where I feel more comfortable and capable of performing," he said. "I played all year as a defender but I am not going to regret that when the time comes to play as a number five for Argentina. (Argentina manager) Alejandro Sabella prefers that I occupy this position.(Pep) Guardiola has been a coach that has left a big impact on my career. He has a lot of similarities to Bielsa and obviously Marcelo is capable of managing Barcelona."

Goalkeeper Diego Lopez is looking forward to a fresh start with Sevilla after enduring a difficult year at Villarreal. He told AS: "It is like I know everyone already and I am very happy to be here. When you find everyone to your liking and working so hard I can say I have made the right choice in signing for this team."

FC Dynamo Kyiv have swooped to sign forward Marco Ruben on a five-year deal from Villarreal CF. "When the offer came from a great club like Dynamo I agreed to make a move," he said. "I'll miss the first round of the league, but will be ready to help my team-mates in the next game against FC Arsenal Kyiv."

The Brazil defender Thiago Silva has signed a five-year deal with Paris Saint-Germain. "I'm very happy that Thiago Silva has signed," PSG's coach, Carlo Ancelotti, said. "He is a fantastic player. Everyone knows that he is one of the best players in the world."
