First Carles Puyol, now Gerard Pique. It's barely been a month, and already Barcelona are looking thin at centre-half. Puyol's injury wasn't entirely unexpected; it's rare that our legendary captain plays a month without some sort of niggling injury resurfacing, it's something the club/physios deal with and it's unlikely to change. Not only that, but we can deal with one injury - Javier Mascherano is more than capable of leading the defense while Gerard Pique has experienced a resurgence of sorts. However, now that Pique's also sidelined through injury, it appears as though Barcelona have a major problem on their hands.
Including Mascherano, the Blaugrana only have three "proper" centre-backs available for selection - the other two being Marc Bartra and Andreu Fontas. Sergio Busquets and Alex Song have dropped back into defense before, but neither are particularly convincing, while in Busquets case especially, it's wasteful to move such a talented pivote into the back-line. Granada at the weekend shouldn't pose a significant threat (although I could be proved wrong), the real problem comes if Geri doesn't recover in time for the Clasico. Put yourself in Tito's shoes, what would you do to solve the current defensive crisis?
Note: Why didn't we sign Alberto Botia in the summer? :(
