Barcelona captured La Liga today after Real Madrid was not capable of beating another Barcelona-based team, Espanyol. The Blaugrana play tomorrow but the result will be academic.

Without kicking a ball, Barcelona reclaimed the La Liga title.

Second-place Real Madrid could not secure the three points necessary and Barca are guaranteed to finish in first place, despite that a few games are still left. A 1-1 draw against Espanyol mathematically secured first place for Barcelona. Barca also still stand a chance to tie the record for most points in a single season, which stands at 100.

The 2012-13 Barcelona are now one of only 3 teams to successfully lead La Liga from the first round to the very last. Lionel Messi is almost guaranteed to win the Pichichi Trophy for most goals.

This season has been full of ups and downs, both from a sporting perspective and on the human side. There were some dominant performances throughout the season, most notably a 3-1 win away to Malaga and a 4-1 comeback triumph over Atletico Madrid. The team yet again reached the semifinals of the Champions League, though they crashed out after heavy losses against Bayern Munich.

There were the grave illnesses to Eric Abidal and Tito Vilanova, but they are both now in great shape. Abidal took the field for the first time in about a year this season in the league. Vilanova returned to the manager's bench after spending a long period in New York recovering.

Real Madrid started slowly this season but they have been incredibly strong since midseason. Barcelona cooled after a record first half, but they have gone at a good enough pace to maintain a double-digit point lead.

The end of the season will present many questions about the direction Barca will take in the future, but at present there is nothing to do but salute the team for a great win.
