Tata Martino will have to face Sunday’s game against Malaga without Messi, who is still recovering from a bruised thigh. The manager explained at today’s press conference that, "we’re very optimistic about his progress" but that the Argentine wouldn’t travel "as a precaution. It’s unnecessary to take risks at the beginning of the season. I’m not worried about Messi because he looks very good to me. He’s prepared himself well during the holidays and has come back in great shape. The injury the other day was down to chance".

Playmaker Arda Turan produced a masterclass to help Atletico Madrid make it two wins in two La Liga matches this season with a 5-0 drubbing of city rivals Rayo Vallecano on Sunday. A host of Rayo's top performers left the cash-strapped club in the close season and Atletico were far superior on a sun-drenched evening at their Calderon stadium.

Carlos Vela scored a 75th-minute equalizer Saturday to give Real Sociedad a 1-1 draw at Elche in Spain, keeping the Basque side undefeated before it completes a critical playoff to reach the Champions League group stage. Elche struck two minutes in when Ferran "Coro" Corominas tapped in a corner kick earned from the hosts' pressure that continued to cause Sociedad problems through the first half.
