And just like that, FC Barcelona became the masters of their own destiny once again. After Atletico Madrid capitulated to slump to a shock 2-0 defeat against lowly Almeria last night, Barcelona are just one win away from reclaiming top spot -- a win that they could secure tonight against Unai Emery's Sevilla. If the Blaugrana can secure that win, they will be back in pole position and knowing that if they match Real Madrid's record (or Atletico Madrid's depending on which of the Madrid clubs finishes the season in better form) they will lift the La Liga title at the season's end.
So, if Barça win, it will once again be their title to lose. Psychologically, that's huge. Chasing the league leaders is a daunting prospect in any league, let alone one as unforgiving as La Liga, where a three point gap can feel like a chasm. Regardless of whether Barcelona lead by a point, or by head-to-head or even by goal difference, they will be top. Real and Atletico Madrid will be the ones who are chasing.
However, Barcelona must first defeat Sevilla in their own back yard. After causing Barcelona problems at the Camp Nou in the season's return fixture, Sevilla may feel confident about their chances, especially will Lionel Messi continuing to struggle for goals. Without Leo in top form, there is something a little "off" about the Blaugrana; will he finally get back to his best tonight, or will Sevilla shut him out?
