FC Barcelona News: 10 March 2014; Barça Turn Focus to Champions League, Barça B Earn Added Time Victory

Week focused on Manchester City and Osasuna | FC Barcelona
Barça have two big games this week. On Wednesday at 8.45 PM CET, there’s the second leg of the Champions League second round match with Manchester City, in which FCB will be defending a 2-0 lead. That’s at the Camp Nou and so is Sunday’s league match at 5.00 PM CET against Osasuna.

The first team returned to training this Sunday morning, following the league defeat last night at Valladolid. Tata Martino's players worked out at 11.00 at the Ciudad Esportiva, where they began to prepare for the return leg of the last 16 tie in the Champions League, this Wednesday, at the Camp Nou, against Manchester City.

Manchester City were eliminated from the FA Cup this Sunday afternoon, going down 2-1 at the Etihad to Wigan, who are quickly becoming City’s nemesis in the competition. In last season’s Wembley final City were beaten 0-1 by Wigan and history repeated itself this season in the quarter-finals.

Puyol exit a huge loss for Barcelona, says Davids -
Former Barcelona midfielder Edgar Davids believes Carles Puyol's departure at the end of the season will prove to be a big loss for the Catalans. The Dutchman played alongside Puyol during his time at the club in the second half of the 2003-04 campaign and he has stressed that the veteran defender, 35, remains one of the club's undisputed key figures.

Barça B were victorious in an agonizing match that saw the Blaugrana dominate from beginning to end, despite not creating many goalscoring chances. The team managed by Eusebio Sacristán managed to corral their rivals into their own area throughout most of the match, but their lack of depth impeded them from scoring. When it looked as though the match was going to end in a draw, Sandro Ramírez converted a penalty kick in added time to win the three points for Barça B.

Cristiano Ronaldo got them going before the break, with Marcelo and an own goal from Nikos rounding things off after the break. The win also means they are four points clear of defending champions Barcelona and surely have to be considered the favourite of the three sides chasing the title.

Real Madrid's Dani Carvajal plays down injury fears -
Real Madrid full-back Dani Carvajal has allayed fears over the injury that he picked up in Sunday's 3-0 home win over Levante. The 22-year-old was carried off on a stretcher in the final moments of the routine victory, and with Alvaro Arbeloa ruled out for three weeks, there were initial fears Madrid could be without their first-choice two right-backs for the Clasico on March 23.

Khedira nearing Real Madrid comeback -
Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira is hopeful that he can return to training within the next few weeks after a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to a knee injury. The Germany international has not featured for Madrid since November 9 after rupturing his cruciate knee ligaments, but he is optimistic about his chances of making a comeback before the end of the 2013-14 campaign.

Paco Alcacer looked to be in an offside position when he slid into convert a cross from Sofiane Feghouli to put Valencia ahead, while Aritz Aduriz levelled after Athletic had been awarded a soft penalty, Ander Herrera colliding with Feghouli in the area.

Sevilla maintain momentum |
Sevilla ensured their preparation for next week's Europa League derby clash with Real Betis was almost perfect with a 3-1 away win over Almeria in the Primera Division. Carlos Bacca, Daniel Carrico and Kevin Gameiro all scored for Sevilla with Aleix Vidal claiming a late consolation for the home side as the result kept the pressure on sixth-placed Real Sociedad, who are two points clear of Sevilla in the overall standings.

Espanyol ease to victory |
Espanyol gave their European hopes a further boost with a dominant 3-1 home win over Elche in the Primera Division. The hosts needed just two minutes to open the scoring, David Lopez heading them in front from a corner. Diego Colotto got the second goal midway through the first half and Pizzi added a third in the second period, although Juan Rafael Fuentes scored an own goal to give the visitors a late consolation.
