Another day, another disappointing England defeat. You’d think that I would be used to it by now – and indeed I am – seeing reported Barcelona target Luis Suarez single-handedly see off Roy Hodgson’s side really was par for the course. It leaves England on the brink of elimination, as they hold out hope for a miracle. They’re probably the only ones though.
Unfortunately, there’s no Barcelona representation on show today – but there are a few interesting games nonetheless. Italy take on one of the surprise packages of the tournament so far, Costa Rica, as they look to maintain their 100% record. France will be hoping to build on their impressive win over Honduras with a victory against tougher opposition in Switzerland. Then we have Honduras facing off against Ecuador. That one doesn’t really sound encouraging, but given that it’s Honduras, we can at least expect some gratuitous violence.
Let’s take a closer look at each game:
Italy vs Costa Rica, Kickoff: 6pm CET
True to form, Italy dismissed their mediocre results in the build-up to the tournament to defeat England in their opening game, controlling the midfield in a 2-1 win. Costa Rica on the other hand shocked the world to upset Uruguay and top the group after a two-goal win. Now, the two teams will square off against each other hoping to move one step closer to qualification. Only a fool would bet against Italy, but lightning might just strike twice for Joel Campbell and Costa Rica if complacency sets in…
France vs Switzerland, Kickoff: 9pm CET
France’s opening game was devoid of drama, purely because Honduras were predictably terrible and capitulated under pressure. Switzerland on the other hand provided us with arguably the most dramatic moment of the tournament so far with their injury-time winner against a plucky performance from underdogs, Ecuador. Will we see excitement in Salvador? Tune in to find out.
Ecuador vs Honduras, Kickoff: 0am CET
Honduras are terrible and boring. Ecuador are mediocre and struggle for goals. This has all the ingredients of another bore draw – so I’m going to ignore the game and make a tenuous link to Barcelona to justify this paragraph. Tonight, Ecuador and Honduras square off in Coritiba – that’s the club that we bought Keirrison from; how fitting that the former and current home of a disappointment would host what should be a disappointing game.
