It all started on Sunday, when sources told Barça Blaugranes that Barcelona and Arsenal have reached an agreement for Alexis Sánchez. On Wednesday, Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger confirmed that the deal was imminent. Now, it is official.
Although the fee is still undisclosed, sources with knowledge to the situation told Barça Blaugranes it is around €40 million, with Barça getting the biggest piece of it. Serie A's Udinese, his former club, also gets a small part of the ammount.
Alexis will sign a four-year contract with a fifth-year option, sources say. Wenger is happy with the signing. "As many people have seen during the World Cup this summer, Alexis is a fantastic footballer and we are delighted that he is joining us at Arsenal Football Club."
He continued "Alexis will add power, creativity and much quality to our squad and we are all looking forward to him joining up with us in a few weeks. He has consistently produced top-quality performances at the highest level for a number of seasons now and we are all excited to see him integrate into the Arsenal squad. I’m sure all Arsenal supporters will join me in welcoming Alexis to our club."
Sánchez also commented on the deal, saying "I’m so happy to be joining Arsenal, a club which has a great manager, a fantastic squad of players, huge support around the world and a great stadium in London. I’m looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and to be playing for Arsenal in the Premier League and Champions League. I will give my best to Arsenal and want to make all the supporters happy."
Alexis has already passed all medical testing and signed his contract. He can make his Arsenal debut at the Emirates Cup, on Saturday, August 2nd.
During his time at Barça, Alexis was a great contributor to the team's success, with a total of 140 appearances, 42 goals and 25 assists. Sánchez also won six titles as a Blaugrana.
We wish Alexis all the best at Arsenal. We'll always remember your contributions and talent, and everything you did for us. Bye, Alexis!!!
