Report: FC Barcelona Interested in Arsenal FC Thomas Vermaelen

Here we go. One more name to Barça's list of possible defensive targets.

According to a report from Mundo Deportivo, Thomas Vermaelen, the 28-year-old Arsenal FC defender, is the next player on Barcelona's radar for the center-back slot. Rumors say that the negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain for Marquinhos are getting more difficult, and the Belgium international could be a solid alternative, just in case.

Also according to the report, Arsenal is already looking for a substitute to Vermaelen, almost counting on his departure. He is a target of Manchester United, who wants everybody just because they are Manchester United, and Barcelona, who actually needs a defender.

One thing that could facilitate the negotiation -- again, if the report is accurate and Barça wants Vermaelen -- is how easy and smooth were the transfer talks between the Gunners and the Blaugrana that ended up with Alexis Sánchez joining the London side. According to multiple sources close to the negotiation, Barça and Arsenal had no issues with each other, and the deal for Alexis happened quickly, and both clubs left their meeting satisfied. If Barcelona actually has interest and wants to push for a Vermaelen transfer, Arsenal could make it easier, since United is a Premier League rival.

Vermaelen hasn't really been strongly linked with a move to Camp Nou, and his signing would be a surprise. But would it be a good one, Barça fans? What do you think?
