Jérémy Mathieu is officially a new FC Barcelona player. After passing his medical and physical exams at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper this Thursday, the Frenchman went to the Camp Nou to sign his four-year contract.

Jérémy Mathieu was present this Thursday as a new FC Barcelona player in front of the media. The new Barça player, who will wear the number 24, explained that joining the team is an important step in his career. "I think I’m currently playing the best football of my career. I am very proud, I have worked very hard to come here," he explained. He added: "I’m a versatile player, but I feel more comfortable as a center back, I’ve come here to play as a center back."

He was joined in the medical centre by a familiar face in Jordi Alba, who also took the tests along with seven other internationals. Mathieu and Alba played together for three seasons at Valencia, so the latter was the ideal man to show the new signing around the training facilities at Sant Joan Despí.

Luis Enrique's Barça were back at training this morning, with the main novelty being the presence of Jérémy Mathieu. The French defender completed his first training session with his new teammates, following his presentation on Thursday. The squad welcomed the new addition, and then trained under the watchful eye of Luis Enrique.

The French defender signed his four-year contract, which includes the option of an additional year, on Thursday afternoon at the Camp Nou. President Josep Maria Bartomeu and Vice-President Jordi Mestre joined the player for the signing ceremony at the Camp Nou. Along with Director of Football Andoni Zubizarreta, the group posed for photos in the Presidential Box.

Andoni Zubizarreta and vice-president Jordi Mestre presented Jérémy Mathieu as a new FC Barcelona player this Thursday. The director of football characterised the Frenchman as "a player that used to play on the left and has adapted his play to be a center back." He added that "he’s good at playing out from the back, he’s powerful and he has quality. We didn’t just sign a great center back, we signed a great footballer."

FC Barcelona’s eight internationals kicked off their preparations for the 2014/15 season this afternoon as they participated in their first training session with the team. Earlier today they passed their medical and physical exams at the Ciutat Esportiva. Luis Enrique worked with 24 players today, 16 of whom were first team players now that the internationals – Piqué, Jordi Alba, Sergio, Song, Xavi, Iniesta, Rakitic and Pedro – are back from holiday.

The 22-year-old Spaniard moved to Wales from Real Betis last summer, but he has not featured for the Barclays Premier League club in recent months.

La Real to play Aberdeen | Football Espana
Real Sociedad will get their Europa League campaign underway against Scottish side Aberdeen. The Dons beat Dutch outfit Groningen in last night’s second-qualifying round and will travel to Anoeta next Thursday for the first leg of the third-qualifying stage.

Sevilla renew Coke contract | Football Espana
Coke has signed a three-year contract extension with Sevilla, putting an end to rumours he would be sold this summer. Marca reports that Marcelo Bielsa wanted the right-back at Marseille and had been in negotiations with Los Rojiblancos but no deal was reached. Coke insisted all along that he wanted to stay at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan and has now gotten his wish. With a year remaining on his previous deal, Coke is tied to Sevilla until 2018.

RFEF uphold Racing Copa ban | Football Espana
Racing Santander will miss next season’s Copa del Rey after the RFEF decided not to lift the suspension imposed for refusing to play. The Racing players declined to participate in the quarter-final second-leg against Real Sociedad in protest at going unpaid for several months, AS has reported.
