Great, great news. A big passing of the torch just happened in FC Barcelona's history.
The club announced on Friday that Sergio Busquets, the long-time Barça defensive midfielder, will wear the number 5 shirt starting next season. "Why is that so big?", you might ask. The reason why this is important is that legendary Barça captain and number 5 owner Carles Puyol personally requested Sergio to inherit the number he so proudly wore for so many years.
"Sergio Busquets will be the new FC Barcelona number five following the retirement last season of its previous owner, Carles Puyol.
The midfielder will be wearing his new shirt number for the first time in Saturday’s friendly in Nice. The Catalan wore number 28 when he made his first team debut under Pep Guardiola in the 2008/09 season, and then wore 16 for the next five years."
People who don't know the history of Barcelona have no idea how big the number five is. Puyol played with it for 483 matches straight, and became one of Barça's biggest icons of all time wearing La Cinco for more than 10 years. Giving it to Busquets shows Puyi's desire to see someone who loves the club as much as he did wearing the shirt. He tweeted:
No tengo dudas de que el número 5 queda en las mejores manos (Sergio Busquets). Estoy seguro que lo cuidarás. Sort amic.— Carles Puyol (@Carles5puyol) August 1, 2014
"I have no doubt that the number 5 is now in the best hands possible (Sergio Busquets). I'm certain that you'll take care of it. Good luck, my friend.
Sergio knows how important this day is, and he went on to say:
"It is an honour to wear number five, and also an honour that Carles Puyol thought that I should inherit it".

Again, this is a huge day for Busquets. We all hope he takes care of the number 5 shirt just as well as our beloved Puyi did.
