Report: Ángel Di María to FC Barcelona "Not even close to happening"

It was just a rumor.

Denis Doyle

If you were excited for Ángel Di María possibly coming, please give up. It's not happening.

Sources confirmed to Barça Blaugranes on Saturday that Barça's interest in the Argentine star was never materialized; no official offers, nothing. "Not even close to happening", a source said. The Blaugrana always wanted Di María, but no real efforts were made, especially after he joined Real Madrid. Barcelona were actually set to push for him when he was still at Benfica, but they stopped when Madrid went after him.

Di María was linked to Barça when his spot at the starting lineup was put in jeopardy with the signings of James Rodríguez and Toni Kroos. He asked to be left out of the squad for the second leg of the Spanish SuperCup, that saw the Madridistas lose to Atlético on Friday night. Many saw that as a sign of Ángel's departure, but not to Barça.

In fact, the 26-year-old attacking-midfielder is set to join Manchester United for a reported fee of €68 million, in one of the biggest transfers of this season. If you wanted him, Barça fans, he's not coming.
