Javier Mascherano is one of the key players in Barcelona's squad, mainly because of his versatility, work-rate and commitment. And the good news is: Masche will stay with Barça for many years to come.
In fact, the 30-year-old has signed a new four-year contract that guarantees him as a Barça player until 2018, the club announced on Tuesday. Mascherano and president Josep Maria Bartomeu inked the agreement this afternoon, and 'The Little Sheriff' is going nowhere until the end of the decade.
"Javier Mascherano signed a new deal with FC Barcelona on Tuesday that will take him through to 30 June 2018. There’s an option on a further year plus a buy-out clause of 100 million euros. The deal was negotiated and agreed before the World Cup.
He told reporters, "I’m committed to this Club until the final day of the contract. I hope I can live up to expectations of the Club"
"I’m really happy to be in this great club and be part of a squad with such great players. Let’s hope things go really well for us this season. We’re looking forward to this season afetr some difficult times last campaign.
The ceremony was attended by Club president Josep Maria Bartomeu, sports vice-president Jordi Mestre and director of football Andoni Zubizarreta."
That's great news. You can't hate a guy that gives everything everytime he steps on the pitch. He was sent off against Elche, sure, but that doesn't change what a great player he is. We're happy to have you, Masche!
