Ter Stegen comments on Barcelona GK race, doesn't see himself as a backup to Claudio Bravo

Perhaps for the first time ever, Barcelona has two really good goalkeepers. Doesn't matter if you prefer Claudio Bravo or Marc-André ter Stegen, both of them are world-class and the perfect choice for the job. As of right now, manager Luis Enrique has used the two, having the Chilean as the La Liga goalie and using the German in Spanish Cup and Champions League matches.

Both Bravo and Stegen have had some amazing peformances this season, and their consistency is one of the main reasons why Barça has the best defense in Europe in 2014-15 -- only 31 goals allowed in 50 matches in all competitions.

Being on the pitch every week, Bravo has the most appearances of the two, and Ter Stegen is not that happy about it. He has made clear that he wants to be the number one keeper for all Barça matches in the upcoming years, and he will work for it. Stegen talked to a German magazine this week and this is what he had to say about the goalkeeper race:

"I don't see myself as a backup goalkeeper. I don't remember a backup goalkeeper that played all Champions League matches.

"Having to alternate appearances with Bravo? It's not the most pleasant situation, which is no secret. I would obviously like to play in all matches.

"I have a very good relationship with Bravo, and I don't have any problems with him. We talk constantly, and wish nothing but the best to him. That said, I want his spot."

I love this. Stegen is young and hungry, and he backs up his statements with spectacular games on the pitch. He is showing Bravo that the number one spot is going to be his, which just makes Bravo work that much harder. Because Luis Enrique is such a great personality manager (or has been so far), that proverbial war between the two keepers hasn't brought damage to the team on the pitch. Instead, they have both tried to outwork each other, which will show Enrique in the end who actually deserves the absolute number one spot the most.

It's good to finally have that. The Pinto Era was fun, but this is better.
