After a convincing first-leg victory at the Camp Nou, FC Barcelona are expected to book their place in the 2015 UEFA Champions League final this evening, as they travel to the Allianz Arena with a 3-0 aggregate lead to take on pep Guardiola's Bayern Munich. The Bavarians famously devastated the Blaugrana back in 2013, taking advantage of Barcelona's injury crisis and general lack of direction to obliterate the four-time UEFA Champions League winners 7-0 over two matches. Now, two years later the roles have been reversed and Barcelona are out for revenge.
With Lionel Messi back to full fitness, not to mention flanked by two of the best forwards in the world, Luis Suarez and Neymar, Barcelona's offensive prowess was simply too much for Bayern to handle in the first-leg, and a stingy gameplan perfectly executed by the Blaugrana midfield and backline ensured Guardiola's side were also frustrated at the other end.
In every aspect, it was a comprehensive victory for FC Barcelona and one that all but booked their place in the final in Berlin. Guardiola and his players have refused to give up hope; Thomas Muller, Rafinha, Mehdi Benatia and pretty much every other Bayern player who has faced the media since that defeat have suggested that a comeback is within the realms of possibility. It would therefore be prudent for Barcelona to approach this match like a one-off, another final that they need to win; in doing so we could send out a statement to the rest of the world, or Juventus and Real Madrid in particular.
A victory tonight, behind enemy lines at the Allianz Arena would be a tremendous feat and clear indication that nothing and no-one will deny us in our quest for the treble.
