Barcelona are close to a deal with the newest Brazilian piece of jewelry.
According to ESPN Brazil, the Catalan club has acquired the priority to sign Fluminense phenom Gerson, the 18-year-old midfielder who has quickly risen through the Brazilian football ranks. After torching the Rio de Janeiro youth system, he became a national U-18 star, and received a promotion to the carioca club's A-squad.
The reports say the Blaugrana have already made a €3 million transfer to the Brazilian team bank accounts. Fluminense is using the money to pay off debts such as unpaid player wages (yes, this happens around here). In January, once the transfer ban is over, Barça will pay a €17 million fee to acquire 70% of the player's rights who for now belong to 'Flu'.
This is so exciting. This is a true promise, and a strong candidate to one day be a midfield superstar with the Catalans. You know everything you like about Halilovic? Gerson does it too. And he's a stronger kid. Plus, since he'll only join Barça in 2016, he'll have the opportunity to play the whole Brazilian League season, which will give him some good experience in a solid, competitive league.
If you don't know him yet, welcome to the Gerson World.
