Mehdi Benatia is a former FC Barcelona target, and the most expensive defensive signing in Bayern Munich's long and proud history. He is a Moroccan international defender and was arguably the best centre-half in the Serie A last season. By all accounts, he seems like a decent enough guy if you ignore reports about how he forced his way out of the Italian capital, and he also stated that he has the utmost respect for Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar off the pitch. On the pitch however, that's a different story...
Speaking to German football magazine, Kicker, Benatia reiterated how he respects Barcelona's attacking trident on a personal level, but that he will not show them any respect on Wednesday at the Camp Nou, or next Tuesday at the Allianz Arena. Mehdi, I know you mean to sound tough and all, but you might want to rethink that strategy.
Between the three of them, Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar have scored 108 goals this season. One hundred and eight. That's only seven fewer goals than the entire Bayern Munich squad have managed all season long. Maybe this needs a little more context; three players, one of whom only started playing in late October, have scored seven fewer goals this season than one of the best team's in Europe.
Whichever way you look at it, that's a scary statistic.
And the most terrifying part is that they just keep on getting better. Last month, 'MSN' combined for 19 goals in eight matches; that's over 2.5 goals per game -- and this past weekend, they grabbed six. SIX. ON THEIR OWN.
I mean, if you want to disrespect them and treat them like any other frontline, then go ahead. Just be warned, it'll be your funeral.
