Some giant news on Thursday could alter the destiny of the UEFA Champions League Final, on Saturday.
Juventus center-back Giorgio Chiellini, who had to leave the Wednesday training session in Turin due to a left leg injury, has been officially ruled OUT of the match against Barcelona, which happens at the Olympic Stadium of Berlin in two days.
The club provided a statement on the injury:
"As the clock ticks down to Saturday's showpiece event at the Olympiastadion, Massimiliano Allegri's men focused on tactics at the Juventus Centre. Missing out was Giorgio Chiellini, who underwent tests after reporting discomfort in his calf on Wednesday. The scan revealed a grade one tear of the soleus muscle in his left leg, meaning the defender will miss Saturday's final with Barcelona."
This is not a surprise after what went down on Wednesday, but this is still a huge story. Chiellini is the pilar, the technical and emotional leader of one of the best defenses on the planet. Not only does he stabilize the whole defensive system of the Bianconeri, the 30-year-old would have the responsibility to cover the left side of Juve's field, where Lionel Messi usually runs around and creates hell for Barça.
As of right now, it is expected that Allegri uses Andrea Barzagli as Chiellini's replacement alongside Leonardo Bonnuci at the heart of Juve's defense. Both are experienced and proven players, but they can't replicate how important Chiellini would be on Saturday.
Terrible news for Juventus. Maybe great news for Barcelona. Only time will tell.
