For the last few days, especially with the foregone conclusion that Adriano Correia is leaving the club, Barcelona has been thinking about signing another defender.
Luis Enrique was happy with his squad, but with the Brazilian on the verge of a departure, the coach has reportedly spoken to his higher ups about the need of signing a new player for the defensive system. Monaco's Aymen Abdennour has been linking himself with the Blaugrana, but it seems like Lucho has his eyes set on someone else.
According to reports from Spanish media, the Catalan giants are set to make a bid for Tottenham Hotspur star center-back Jan Vertonghen. This deal was actually close to happen last season, but the Belgium international decided to stay in the Premier League for another year. He seems happy with his Spurs role and he has been rock solid for the London side.
It would take a lot of persuasion and a good amount of money to convince him to move operations to La Liga. The Blaugrana were set to make a €25 million offer the last time around, and the number will likely be the same if the rumors are accurate. Barça would also improve their deal with the player himself, with better wages and performance bonuses.
The Abdennour deal seems more likely right now, but Vertonghen is not a bad alternative at all.
