We are one week away from the start of Barcelona's official season, but there is one more friendly to play - the 50th edition of the Joan Gamper Trophy, and coach Luis Enrique is excited to be a part of the first Camp Nou game of 2015/16.
Talking to the media before the match against AS Roma on Wednesday, the Blaugrana boss called the whole Gamper event a "special" occasion, and while this isn't an official match, it is different because it's the first game in front of the Camp Nou crowd. Lucho also said his players are eager to play the Gamper and get ready for the European and Spanish Super Cups coming up next week.
Here's a few highlights from his pre-match conference:
"Each time this game comes round it’s the first time we get to meet the fans again at the start of a new season and that is always something special - I hope it turns into a footballing party and a great game against a great opponent.
"The squad is really looking forward to the Gamper and then two Super Cups and a great start to the league. We’ve had a good pre-season – though we need to improve at the back - and I am satisfied with the collective effort we’ve made. The results haven’t been the best maybe, but I would give the squad a high mark overall. The best thing for me is that it is over and now we get down to the real business with the start of the season".
The team for the Gamper
"It’s hard to see us playing the same team for the Gamper and the European Super Cup, though I’ve not yet decided who’ll play".
"I’m still focussed on things around the pre-season and ensuring everyone gets some game time. We’ve been prioritising other things ahead of this first official game".
Choice of captains
"The players made their choice, which I am happy about and I am pleased for Mascherano".
"There are other important players in the squad who aren’t captains and who have a voice and a vote in the changing room".
Experience at AS Roma
"It was a unique experience and I am happy to AS Roma for the opportunity they gave me"
"It was a year of big changes – owners, players, coach….we wanted to introduce new things and we found players who were very prepared for that and a club which was right behind us. I have a good memory of that time and I just wish we could have finished higher".
"Emery’s side are a team who every year have to work hard to adapt to the players coming in and out".
"They’ll be competitive against us - pre-season results are just anecdotal and I am sure the final will be hard fought and tough for both teams".
