Zinedine Zidane enjoyed a dream debut in charge of Real Madrid as Gareth Bale scored a hat-trick in a rampant 5-0 win over Deportivo. Karim Benzema got the Zidane era off to an ideal start by scoring after just 15 minutes and then Bale netted either side of the break before scoring a second header to complete his treble.

What was missing was a goal for Ronaldo, who endured a frustrating evening. The first 45 minutes saw regular shots taken but just one on target; a relatively simple, close-range header also hit a post. Into the second half, there were cheers from the crowd for a tackle to win the ball back in the Depor half, and seconds later, there was supportive applause as a weak shot went straight at Lux.

The Frenchman put the hosts in front midway through the first half by providing a classy finish to a quick team break and in the second half converted a controversial penalty to seal an eighth consecutive home victory in the league for Unai Emery's side.

Deportivo La Coruna forward Lucas Perez has been named La Liga's Player of the Month for December. The 27-year-old took his tally for the season up to 12 goals last month, having scored three times against Sevilla, Barcelona and Eibar.

Getafe 1-0 Real Betis - ESPN FC
Alvaro Vazquez scored the only goal as Getafe beat Real Betis 1-0 to pile more pressure on Pepe Mel. The Catalan striker's second-half goal condemned Betis boss Mel to a fourth straight defeat in all competitions and his side have now gone eight games without a win.

Deyverson and Jose Morales on target as Levante beat fellow strugglers Rayo - ESPN FC
Brilliant second-half goals from substitute Deyverson and Jose Morales earned bottom side Levante a crucial 2-1 win over Rayo Vallecano in their Primera Division relegation battle. The hosts burst into life in the second half at the Ciudad de Valencia and broke the deadlock with a fine Deyverson volley after 72 minutes.
