Real Madrid remain in the title race after goals from Karim Benzema, Lucas Vazquez and Luka Modric earned them a hard-fought 3-0 win at home to Villarreal, although Cristiano Ronaldo was unable to finish the game due to a suspected muscle injury.

Real Madrid's joy at downing Villarreal 3-0 was tempered with concerns over Cristiano Ronaldo's fitness after the forward failed to complete 90 minutes. The Portugal striker appeared to hurt himself while attempting a late overhead kick during the game, as Madrid kept the pressure on Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

Real Madrid don’t yet know the extent of any injury Cristiano Ronaldo suffered late in the win over Villarreal. Ronaldo left the pitch of his own accord in the 90th minute of the 3-0 victory against the Yellow Submarine, with AS reporting Zinedine Zidane had to ask his staff why the forward had departed, as Ronaldo didn’t inform anyone he was hurt.

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has admitted that he regrets not resting Cristiano Ronaldo more frequently. The Portugal star limped off in the closing stages of Wednesday's 3-0 win over Villarreal, and while the French boss says he is "relaxed" over the fitness of his ace, he has hinted that this is a worry that could have been avoided.

Fernando Torres scores winner as Atletico Madrid keep pace - ESPN FC
Fernando Torres again proved his worth to Atletico Madrid by scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win at Athletic Bilbao to keep the pressure on Primera Division leaders Barcelona. Torres headed in Antoine Griezmann's looping cross in the 38th minute to score for the fifth game in a row and Atletico withstood pressure from the hosts in the second half to claim a fourth consecutive league win.

Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin was substituted off with an apparent hamstring injury in the 11th minute of their match against Athletic Bilbao. The extent of the injury is not known, but the club reported on their official Twitter account that it was a muscle injury to his right thigh.

Sporting Gijón 2-1 Sevilla FC - ESPN FC
Isma Lopez scored an injury-time winner as Sporting Gijon climbed out of the Primera Division relegation zone with a surprise 2-1 victory over Sevilla. Sporting had only won once in 12 league matches and looked on course for another damaging defeat when Vicente Iborra gave Sevilla an early lead at Estadio El Molinon.

Valencia 4-0 Eibar - ESPN FC
Valencia continued their recent revival with a convincing 4-0 Primera Division defeat of Eibar that was inspired by a hat-trick from striker Paco Alcacer. The victory was their third in succession, following previous successes away at Barcelona and at home over Sevilla, and takes them up to eighth place from 13th, after their recent struggles towards the foot of Spain's top flight.

Federico Ricca struck an injury-time equaliser as Malaga denied Rayo Vallecano a crucial win at Estadio La Rosaleda. Ricca, a January signing from Uruguayan side Danubio, popped up to turn the ball home in the closing moments to cancel out Jose Baena's fortunate opener.
