Barcelona and the Brazilian Federation cut a deal a few months ago that allowed Neymar to participate in only one of the national team tournaments this summer. After missing the Copa América, the Barça superstar is back with the Seleção.
Neymar has been called up by U-23 coach Rogério Micale to be in the squad for the football tournament in the 2016 Olympic Games, which starts on August 4th in Brasília, when Brazil takes on South Africa. Brazil also faces Iraq and Denmark in the group stage.
The Brazil captain is able to play in the Olympics thanks to a rule that allowa three players over the age of 23 to be named in the squad. Along with Neymar are 37-year-old goalkeeper Fernando Prass from Palmeiras, and 25-year-old attacker Douglas Costa from Bayern Munich.
Rafinha Alcântara is the second Barça player called to the Brazil squad. Rafinha missed the South American Cup due to an injury, but recovered in time to be available for Rio 2016.
This is the 18-man that will represent the host nation:
Goalkeepers: Fernando Prass (Palmeiras - BRA), Uilson (Atlético Mineiro - BRA)
Defenders: William (Internacional - BRA), Luan (Vasco da Gama - BRA), Rodrigo Caio (São Paulo - BRA), Marquinhos (Paris Saint-German - FRA), Douglas Santos (Atlético Mineiro - BRA), Zeca (Santos - BRA)
Midfielders: Rafinha (Barcelona - ESP), Rodrigo Dourado (Internacional - BRA), Fred (Shakhtar Donetsk - UKR), Thiago Maia (Santos - BRA), Felipe Anderson (Lazio - ITA)
Forwards: Neymar (Barcelona - ESP), Douglas Costa (Bayern Munich - GER), Gabriel Barbosa (Santos - BRA), Gabriel Jesus (Palmeiras - BRA), Luan (Grêmio - BRA)
Neymar, Rafinha and the Seleção start a two-week training camp on July 18th, and hope to win the football tournament on August 20th, at Maracanã Stadium. Obviously, Neymar will miss the entire preseason preparation at Barcelona, and if Brazil reach the final, he will not play the Spanish Super Cup against Sevilla.
