Barcelona kept pace with Real Madrid and Sevilla at the top of La Liga as they dispatched Eibar with a 4-0 win at the Ipurua, thanks to goals from Denis Suarez, Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar. The Blaugrana may have lost Sergio Busquets through injury early on, but they fought through his absence to pick up another valuable win, deep in the heart of the Basque Country.
After losing Sergio Busquets to what looked like a nasty ankle injury, Barcelona struggled to gain a foothold in the opening period against Eibar. The Basque team were aggressive and as such, the Blaugrana couldn’t find their rhythm. However, while the hosts were perhaps dictating their style on proceedings, it was the visitors who struck first. Denis Suarez replaced Sergio Busquets and it was his driven shot from outside the area that handed Luis Enrique’s side the lead.
It could have been over at the break as well, as Luis Suarez struck the post on the stroke of half-time; but even in spite of that miss, Barcelona seemed relatively comfortable with their lead. Still, an insurance goal wouldn’t go amiss.
Turns out we wouldn’t have to wait long. Lionel Messi was becoming increasingly influential as the match progressed, and he started the second half in fine form. A wall pass with Luis Suarez was all it took for Messi to be teed up for an easy tap-in, and with a cushion to work with, this game seemed as good as over.
While Eibar were keeping ter Stegen busy, it was Barcelona who continued to add to the scoreboard; Luis Suarez grabbed a third with a fine finish at the near post and Neymar wrapped it up in injury time with a fine finish of his own and that was all she wrote for Eibar. They put up a valiant effort, but they just couldn’t hang with this resurgent Barça offense.
