Javier Mascherano will retire from international football this summer after the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. He’s said so himself. And now there’s speculation that this season could be his last at Barcelona.

A report in Diario SPORT says the midfielder/defender wants to play more. After eight years of being a fixture for the Catalans, he is now strictly a backup to Samuel Umtiti. It would not be an easy decision, but Mascherano is said to want one last European adventure before returning to Argentina, where he could start becoming a coach.

His destination is unknown, but his most important concerns revolve around a club which would be comfortable language-wise and culturally. He could also spend one last season at Barcelona, at which point he’d turn 35.
