Barcelona have confirmed that Javier Mascherano picked up an injury during international duty and will be out of action for the next four weeks.

The 33-year-old featured for Argentina in their 4-2 friendly defeat by Nigeria but suffered the injury which will see him sidelined for a while.

“FC Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano has suffered an injury to his right hamstring, the Club confirmed on Wednesday following medical tests carried out at the team’s training center in Sant Joan Despí.

“The 33-year-old Argentinian was hurt during Tuesday night’s international friendly against Nigeria. The match was played in Russia, the host country of next summer’s World Cup. Mascherano is expected to be out for around four weeks.”

The news will be a blow to Ernesto Valverde, particularly with Samuel Umtiti and Gerard Pique both just one yellow card away from a suspension.

If either of them were to pick up another booking they would automatically incur a one-match ban and with Mascherano out, that just leaves Thomas Vermaelen as Valverde’s only other recognised centre-back.
