Marc-André ter Stegen

Produced a great reaction save in the 16th minute. The ball came to him at pace but ter Stegen managed to get his arm up and palm it away. Frequently made important saves throughout to keep Villarreal out.

Sergi Roberto

Villarreal did on occasion manage to get in behind Sergi Roberto which may be attributed to his lack of pace.

Thomas Vermaelen

Looked sometimes vulnerable to the long ball over the top as the attackers found the gap in-between him and Jordi Alba. Also made a few errors at times which led to Villarreal chances.

Gerard Piqué

Unlucky to see his header hit the crossbar in the early stages. Was also on hand to produce needed clearances in the box.

Jordi Alba

With little width provided by the midfielders, a lot of the reposnbility falls to Jordi Alba and he has consistently done this well over the season. Again in this game, he was producing runs which a good pass could have found him. He was also very good at sweeping behind and stopping Villarreal chances.

Sergio Busquets

Picked up a yellow for a late challenge but otherwise very good. Assisted Messi for his goal.

Ivan Rakitić

An okay performance but still looks out of his depth on the wing.

Paulinho

Seemed to struggle to get going in an attacking sense as we didn’t see any of his late runs that we have become accustomed to. Was taken off in the 67th.

Denis Suárez

Was pretty ineffective until he was hooked just before the hour mark.

Lionel Messi

Always looked the danger for Barcelona. A jinking run in the first few minutes and then a free kick just after 20 where the highlights as Barça looked to give him the ball as much as possible. Sometimes this had a negative effect though as Villarreal where able to anticipate it but the skill of Messi meant he could still create chances. Again in the second half, he was the most creative. Inparticular with link-up play with Alba, Messi was coming closer and closer to finding the net. As Villarreal pushed forward to get an equaliser, it allowed Messi freedom in the box and he punished them. Slotting the ball into the corner to confirm the three points for Barça.

Luis Suárez

Another game of Suárez continuing his eternal battle with the offside flag. He did however get a goal. Showing great strength and composure, he took it round the keeper to break the deadlock in Barça’s favour.
