Barcelona B are not taking the easy road, but they’re still there with every chance to win promotion. Today, they lost 0-1 against Cartagena, but due to winning the first leg 2-1 away, the Catalan team advance to the final on away goals.

The B team won their group in Segunda Division B by a wide margin, finishing 15 points ahead of their nearest challengers. They had a chance to win promotion outright by defeating another group winner, Cultural Leonesa, over two legs. But they bottled it, losing 0-2 and 1-2.

But they have another chance now, after passing Cartagena. Another win in a two-legged tie brings them promotion.

In the first leg against Cartagena, Dani Romera put the Catalans in front after a bit of fortune made the ball bounce up for him to strike in the box. Minutes later, German Saenz equalized for Cartagena after a poor mistake from Jose Martinez. The young defender failed to clear the ball after a save from Jose Suarez.

But the result was salvaged thanks to a wonder goal from Gerard Gumbau, whose impeccably placed curling shot hit the bottom corner of the net.

Back in Barcelona, the B team made it hard for themselves, conceding a late goal by Sergio Garcia that put the tie on a knife’s edge, with a 2-2 aggregate scoreline. The B team withstood late pressure and went through on away goals.

Now, Barcelona B awaits their next opponent, which is yet to be decided.
