Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has once again spoken about Lionel Messi’s contract extension and says “he is already playing under his new contract.”

Messi’s future has been the subject of some anxiety with the club having announced way back in July that he had agreed an extension, yet he is still to actually sign it.

Bartomeu has previously insisted it is all “signed and agreed” and now seems to suggest the new deal is already in effect as his father has put pen to paper.

"We will take the photo with Messi's signature, hopefully before the end of the year, but the contract has been signed by his father, who has the power of his image rights,” he said.

“This contract is signed until 2022 and he is already playing under it.”

Bartomeu has also given an update on Andres Iniesta’s future having previously said his new deal was all agreed, only for the midfielder to insist that actually that is not the case.

"The agreement with Iniesta will be special, it will be different just because it is him, I won't reveal exactly what because it is part of private negotiations, but with Ramon Sostres, we have been talking for a long time,” said Bartomeu.

"Iniesta isn't just a reference point for us, but also for the young supporters, he has earned the right to play here until he decides not to any more, Andres is critical to this club and the intention is that this extension will be an indefinite contract so that he can finish whenever he desires."

Bartomeu has had plenty to say about both players and while they are expected to sign on, the fact they haven’t just adds to the feeling of uncertainty surrounding the club after a turbulent summer.
