Barcelona had an awful first half and went down against Getafe, but the La Liga leaders found a way to come back in the second half and won 2-1 thanks to goals from substitutes Denis Suarez and Paulinho, who scored his first goal for the club to get three crucial points in this young season.
The first half was very disappointing from the Blaugrana, who were lazy and slow with their passing and couldn’t compete against a Getafe side that showed incredible intensity, closing down every Barça player throughout the first period and playing on the front foot for the entire half. Getafe found a way to take shots at goal every time they recovered the ball, and eventually they got a reward for their fantastic first half.
And what a reward it was: after a cross into the box fell to the edge of the box, Gaku Shibasaki took a first time volley that went into the top left corner like a rocket. Ter Stegen had no chance, and Getafe had a deserved lead. Barça woke up with the goal and began to show a little more urgency with their play, and if it wasn’t for a spectacular save by Vicente Guaita, Lionel Messi would have scored the equalizer with a free kick into the top corner.
At halftime, Getafe thoroughly deserved the lead and Barça had a lot of work to do to get the victory.
Ernesto Valverde brought Denis Suarez in place of Andrés Iniesta at halftime in hopes of bringing more pace and skill to the midfield, and Barça began to dominate the match camping themselves inside Getafe’s half and starting to really pressure the hosts.
No real chances were created for a while, but the pressure gave the Blaugrana the equalizer when Sergi Roberto found Denis inside the box and the midfielder scored a great goal with a beautiful shot into the top corner to make it 1-1. Valverde made one final change with Paulinho in place of Ivan Rakitic, and the Brazilian silenced all the haters.
Thanks to a sensational assist from Messi, Paulinho found himself alone in the box, and he place a great shot to the top corner to put Barça in front with just five minutes to go. Getafe made a final push to try and equalize at the end of the game, but Barça were able to hang on to the result and pick up a key victory on the road.
