Using rumors to your own advantage

Some inside information was revealed by Bayern Munich manager Carlo Ancelotti this week about Barcelona “target” Marco Verratti.

"I don't like those things, that kind of behaviour," said Ancelotti. "Many players want to leave their clubs when the transfer window is open, but I don't know if they really want to leave just improve their contracts. Verratti? He wanted a better contract. I know him well!"

So it seems that despite all of the Verratti rumors, all he really wanted was to stay at Paris Saint-Germain.

The links didn’t really ever come to anything legitimate, and now we get a better look at why that was. Verratti would have been an interesting player for Barcelona should the deal have gone through.

What is most interesting is that Verratti to Barcelona rumors likely helped him in contract negotiations. It’s an interesting thought experiment to consider whether players use ridiculous transfer rumors to nail down a new contract or not.

While Ancelotti’s comments don’t specifically say that Verratti used the rumors as leverage, it remains an interesting wrinkle to keep in mind in transfer rumors moving forward.
