Agustí Benedito, who ran unsuccessfully for FC Barcelona president, has called for the current president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, to resign.
“We are facing a lack of leadership and credibility,” Benedito said on RAC 1. ”Bartomeu wanted authorization for something that was very important, such as eliminating the debt ceiling and the members told him they did not believe him. From that moment, he had minimal coherence and what he should do now is resign.”
The move to raise the debt ceiling was rejected.
”Thank God they were not authorized to remove it,” he said. ”I am happy that a calm conclusion was reached and I am waiting for his presidency to end. It has been disastrous for Barcelona.”
FC Barcelona are atop La Liga right now but fans and socis have called Bartomeu’s leadership into question over the overall strategy the club has had for years.
Still, Bartomeu won the last election convincingly and a lot of minds need to be changed for him to lose out on a second elected term. Bartomeu himself first ascended to the presidency after Sandro Rosell resigned.
