“Since we were all young boys we wanted to play against the best, and [Lionel] Messi is certainly the best and the best ever,” Kieran Trippier said after his Tottenham Hotspur were outplayed by Barcelona in a 2-4 loss at Wembley Stadium.
Messi scored twice as he delivered an all-around masterclass to help Barcelona win their second UEFA Champions League group stage game.
“He was on form,” Trippier continued. “He just pops up in those situations where you can’t get near him, because he has that quality in him. He’s difficult to play against but you’ve got to give a lot of credit to our boys and the subs that came on as well.”
Speaking in a post-match interview just after the final whistle, Trippier had already given a classy tribute to the Argentina star.
“He was unbelievable in the game. We all know the quality of a player, and when he’s in that form, he’s magic to watch. These are the games you want to be involved in, that you dream of playing in,” Trippier said.
”Barcelona were the better team on the night, but we’ll take plenty of positives out of it,” the fullback concluded.
