FC Barcelona’s 42-match unbeaten streak in league games at the Camp Nou, covering the entire Ernesto Valverde era and more, came to an end on Sunday afternoon against a side they hadn’t lost to in any of their previous fourteen meetings.

The unbeaten run began with Luis Enrique as coach and the Asturian guided the team to 14 wins and three draws in the league before the arrival of Ernesto Valverde. Since then the man known as ‘Txingurri’ has led the side in no less than 50 games in La Liga with 35 wins, 12 draws and just three defeats.

“We didn’t play well in the first half” confessed a disappointed Ernesto Valverde after his first ever home defeat as Barça manager. “And we just couldn’t work our way back into the game. We’d been on a good run. But we didn’t start this game well at all. There was something generally missing. We upped the intensity in the second half, and managed to create a lot more than we were doing before.”

In the second half Barça fought back with a penalty from Messi only for Lo Celso to score almost immediately at the other end. Arturo Vidal’s goal was followed by Canales’ effort for Betis before a late second from Messi on his return from injury led to a frantic last few minute in which Barça were not able to find the equaliser.
