Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani has offered his response to claims he offered to fight Lionel Messi during Monday’s friendly against Argentina.

The two players clashed during the 2-2 draw in Israel with reports suggesting Cavani challenged Messi, and the Barcelona captain responded with “whenever you want, whenever you want.”

Cavani has now been asked by reporters about the incident and confirmed he and Messi did have words during the match.

“Yes, that’s football. That’s what the Clasico matches [between Argentina and Uruguay] are like. That’s football.”

Cavani had given Uruguay the lead in the match before Sergio Aguero equalised from a Messi free-kick. Luis Suarez then fired Oscar Tabarez’s side ahead before Messi equalised in stoppage-time from the penalty spot.
