Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp gave his opinion on who should win the Ballon d’Or award, giving consideration to both his player Virgil van Dijk and to Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.
“If you give the Ballon d’Or to the best player of this generation then you should give it always to Lionel Messi. That’s how it is,” he said. “But if you give it to the best player of last season, then it was Virgil van Dijk.
“I don’t know exactly how it will work but that is how I see it.
“The best player of all? That’s Lionel. Best player of last season? That’s Virgil. We will see.”
Messi beat Van Dijk to the FIFA The Best award earlier this year. Players who win that award have gone on to win France Football’s prize as well. However, the voting for The Best showed Van Dijk winning amongst journalists, but Messi overwhelming him with votes from national team coaches and captains. The Ballon d’Or only counts votes from journalists, and not coaches or players.
