FC Barcelona News: 20 February 2019; Barcelona Held Scoreless in Lyon, Search for Reinforcements Continues

FC Barcelona have it all to do in the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie with Olympique Lyonnais following Tuesday’s 0-0 draw. But it could have been oh so different. The blaugrana were the superior side from start to finish and had no fewer than 25 attempts on goal, but it was one of those nights when the ball just did not want to go in.

A draw away from home is not a bad result, though it would have been better had Barcelona managed to score at Lyon. Ernesto Valverde’s team were excellent defensively and should be applauded for that.

They say there is the “smell of a deal” and that Inter delegate Giuseppe Marotta and sporting director Piero Ausilio have met in secret with Barcelona to negotiate. Their offer is 35 million but Barcelona want 45m. 10m separating the two. If there is an agreement it could be around 40m.

Barcelona know the Uruguayan at some point must be replaced and they are looking at Lille’s Nicolas Pepe, the Ivory Coast striker. France Football say Barcelona took advantage of the trip to France for the Champions League to play Lyon to watch Pepe at the weekend. Lille drew 0-0 with Montpellier, but Pepe impressed.

The revamped tournament is set to start this August, with the winners and runners-up of both La Liga and the Copa del Rey qualifying under the new format proposed by Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales.
