FC Barcelona took a big step in their quest to win La Liga with a 4-1 triumph over Real Betis that puts them 10 points clear at the top. With the team already in the Copa del Rey final and in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals, is Gerard Piqué thinking about winning the treble for a record third time?
“It’s good that people are excited, but we have to keep our feet on the ground,” the defender said after the win. “La Liga is moving closer. However, the Champions League has been difficult for us at the quarterfinal stage.”
Barcelona have had trouble advancing past that stage for a few seasons now. They will have to beat Piqué’s old club, Manchester United, to advance to this year’s semifinal, where they will play either FC Porto or Liverpool, the latter of whom are favorites to advance and meet Barça.
“We’ve taken three very important points,” Piqué said of the league win. ”The gap between us and the others is very important, but there is still a lot of football to play. We are feeling good, but we must continue to approach things match by match.”
Atlético Madrid’s loss earlier this past weekend gave Barça chance to extend their lead atop La Liga, which they were able to do thanks to a stunning Lionel Messi hat-trick.
“He’s a special footballer,” Piqué said of his captain.
”There have been others throughout history, but Leo has been doing this for 14 years. He’s unique in that there’s nobody like him in history.”
