Jean-Clair Todibo could be included as part of the operation to sign Matthijs de Ligt from Ajax, or he could join AS Roma, as the young defender may be sold or loaned with Barcelona looking to have an excess of central defenders next season.
The first rumor comes from Diario SPORT. They say Todibo would be loaned to lower the asking price for De Ligt, something that Ajax are interested in. Officials from both clubs have met and are discussing ways to make the transfer mutually beneficial. The final say, however, still depends on De Ligt himself.
The next rumor comes from Mundo Deportivo, which reports that Roma have made an inquiry through intermediaries about the young defender’s situation. The Italians are looking for a sale or loan.
On the one hand, loaning or selling Todibo could make sense. The team has a whopping six senior centerbacks at the moment - Todibo, Gerard Piqué, Clément Lenglet, Samuel Umtiti, Thomas Vermaelen, and Jeison Murillo. Vermaelen is out of contract and Murillo will return from loan, but that still leaves four, with perhaps one more (De Ligt) on the way.
Despite that, at the moment Barca are not ready to part with Todibo. It remains to be seen how a De Ligt incoming transfer would change the situation, but even if the Dutch defender were to come, Todibo could remain in the squad for his ability to play as a defensive midfielder. The final say may depend on Barcelona’s manager, Ernesto Valverde.
